The Federal Magistrates Court of Australia (also known as the Federal Magistrates Court) was established at the end of 1999. The Court is an independent federal court under the Australian Constitution. The jurisdiction of the Federal Magistrates Court includes family law and child support, administrative law, bankruptcy, unlawful discrimination, consumer protection law, privacy law, migration, copyright, industrial relations and admiralty law. The Court shares those jurisdictions with the Family Court of Australia and the Federal Court of Australia. The objective of the Federal Magistrates Court is to provide a simpler and more accessible alternative to litigation in the superior courts and to relieve the workload of those courts.
The Family Court of Australia is a specialist Federal court dealing only with family law matters. The Court was created by the Family Law Act 1975 and exercises original and appellate jurisdiction across Australia, except in Western Australia.
The Child Support Agency (CSA) supports separated parents in taking joint responsibility for their children. An Australian Government agency and part of the Department of Human Services, the CSA is responsible for administering the Australian Child Support Scheme. This involves working with separated parents to transfer payments for the benefit of their children.
